Between October 2023 and May 2024, an estimated 2,900 Uzbek citizens illegally crossed the US-Mexico border in the San Diego region, Fox News reports. The U.S. Border and Customs Service reported that during this period, 30,000 Chinese citizens, 8,900 Indian citizens, and 7,800 Turkish citizens also crossed the border in the same region.
Previously in 2023, U.S. media outlets stated that an Islamist collaborator had assisted Uzbek citizens in entering the U.S. However, the White House administration later clarified that there were no indications of terrorists entering the country.
Earlier, Daryo reported a notable increase in illegal immigrants from Central Asia, with an estimated 50,000 individuals entering the U.S. in 2023. Concerns were raised regarding potential connections between some of these individuals and extremist groups.
The Migration Policy Institute's data from 2021 shows that the immigrant population in the U.S. was approximately 45.3 mn, representing a substantial portion of the total U.S. population of about 331.9 mn. The U.S. formally accepts around one million migrants annually under its immigration policies.
