Uzbekistan and IFAD discussed the new 2023-2027 country strategic program focused on sustainable agriculture, food security, rural development, and capacity building, following the meeting in Italy.
Uzbekistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakhtiyor Saidov, held a meeting with Alvaro Lario, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), at the Fund's headquarters in Rome on May 29.
Saidov and Lario's discussions focused on several key areas. They highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation between Uzbekistan and IFAD, emphasizing the need to attract international expertise to boost the country's agricultural sector. Both parties recognized that securing a stable food supply is crucial for Uzbekistan's future. Additionally, they discussed advancing industrial agricultural practices and technologies within the country.
The meeting also highlighted the new IFAD country strategic program for 2023-2027, which aims to implement sustainable agricultural practices, enhance food security, promote rural development, and build local capacity through training and access to modern agricultural technologies. This program represents a continuation of Uzbekistan's efforts to benefit from IFAD's resources and expertise, following its membership in the organization since February 2011.
In conjunction with the meeting at IFAD, the Uzbek delegation, led by Saidov, participated in the third ministerial conference in the “Italy – Central Asia” format, held on May 28-29 in Rome. This conference provided a platform for Central Asian countries to discuss and explore collaborative opportunities with Italy, focusing on economic, environmental, and security issues. During the conference, Uzbekistan engaged in a series of bilateral negotiations, further strengthening its ties with Italy and other Central Asian nations.
Established in 1977, IFAD welcomed Uzbekistan as a member in February 2011. Currently, the Fund is implementing a new country program for Uzbekistan, covering the period from 2023 to 2027.
