A delegation from Turkmenistan embarked on a six-day study tour to Türkiye, aimed at garnering insights into combating desertification and land degradation, TurkmenPortal reported.
Organized within the purview of the UNDP/GEF project "Conservation and sustainable management of land resources and ecosystems of high natural value in the Aral Sea basin to achieve multiple benefits" in conjunction with the FAO project "Central Asia Countries Initiative on Land Management" (CACILM-2), this initiative stresses a collaborative effort towards environmental sustainability.
Comprising representatives from ministries and departments including the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the hyakimliks (Municipalities) of Lebap and Dashoguz velayats (administrative division), alongside the Scientific Information Center of the Interstate Commission for Sustainable Development (SIC ICSD), the delegation sought to leverage Türkiye’s experiences in addressing environmental challenges.
Over the course of their visit, the Turkmenistan delegation toured various demonstration sites facilitated by local departments of the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Urban Development, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye.
In the city of Adana, participants delved into local initiatives geared towards enhancing soil fertility and fostering sustainable agriculture practices. Meanwhile, in Konya, the delegation witnessed firsthand the implementation of large-scale afforestation projects and the adoption of water-saving technologies.
Additionally, in Gaziantep, the delegation was privy to the outcomes of collaborative efforts between urban and rural communities aimed at thwarting desertification and safeguarding natural resources.
Türkiye stands as one of Turkmenistan's foremost trading allies, with approximately 600 Turkish companies actively engaged in various sectors such as trade, construction, energy, transport, communications, and textiles within the local market.
Over the past four years, bilateral trade has surged, tripling in volume and surpassing the $2.5bn mark by 2023. Both Turkmenistan and Türkiye have set their sights on further amplifying this economic exchange, aiming to elevate it to $5bn in the foreseeable future.
