Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are optimistic that their upward trajectory in bilateral trade will persist, with both nations setting their sights on surpassing $1bn in trade volume in the near future, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan reported.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Murat Nurtleu, met with Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, marking another step in the strengthening of the strategic partnership between the two nations.
The discussions between the foreign affairs officials covered a wide array of topics including political collaboration, trade and economics, transit and transport, energy, and cultural exchange. The focal point of the talks was the practical implementation of agreements previously made during state visits between the presidents of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
Nurtleu highlighted the progress achieved in bilateral relations in recent years, attributing it to the political resolve demonstrated by the leadership of both countries. Trade between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan has particularly flourished, with the volume nearly quadrupling over the past five years and reaching $563mn in 2023.
Transit and transport cooperation, exemplified by the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway, was also commended, with a 20% increase in transportation volume recorded last year. Additionally, both parties acknowledged the untapped potential for collaboration in the energy sector and pledged to explore joint projects further.
Meredov reiterated Turkmenistan's steadfast support for Kazakhstan's initiatives on the global and regional stage, affirming his confidence that the ongoing negotiations would further bolster cooperation between the two nations.
Cultural and humanitarian ties were also emphasized, with plans underway for reciprocal cultural events and the unveiling of monuments commemorating revered poets from both countries. The upcoming celebration of the 300th birth anniversary of Turkmen classic Magtymguly Fragi was particularly highlighted as a significant milestone in cultural cooperation.
Furthermore, the ministers synchronized their approaches to regional and international affairs, reaffirming their commitment to close collaboration within multilateral frameworks. They stressed the importance of deepening regional cooperation, including finalizing the signing of the five-party Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborhood, and Cooperation for the Development of Central Asia in the 21st Century.
