In the first quarter of 2024, nearly 400,000 tons of cargo were transported between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan as it was informed by the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan on May 23.
The ministry highlighted issues with visa issuance at the border for Turkmen truck drivers. This issue arises amidst a notable increase in cargo transportation between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, serving as a crucial transit route to Central Asia and the Middle East.
Transport and logistics are key in the bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The Ministry emphasized the importance of international road freight transportation, with both countries committed to improving logistics capabilities.
Since mid-April 2024, Turkmen truck drivers have reported difficulties obtaining entry visas to Uzbekistan, while drivers from other countries face no such issues. LogiStan, a transport and logistics channel on Telegram, suggests this could be due to unequal entry conditions for drivers from both countries. Turkmenistan charges Uzbek drivers $700-$900 for an entry permit, compared to Uzbekistan's $200 fee for Turkmen drivers.
The Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with Turkmen authorities, is negotiating to address these disparities. The aim is to create equal conditions for drivers from both countries, alleviating visa issuance problems and promoting smoother cargo transportation.
