Kazakhstan's potential as a drone technology hub is gaining attention, with experts citing its vast territory as ideal for drone use in various sectors, including forestry, agriculture, energy, rescue operations, mapping, and defence. Strong trade ties with Korea make it an attractive market for Korean drone technology, known as K-drone technology. In a recent interview with The Korea Herald at the Kazakh Embassy in Seoul, Vice Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development, Beispekov Azamat, discussed the country's growing drone industry. The discussion preceded the Korea Drone Expo in Incheon, where Astana organized the "2024 Kazakhstan-Korea Drone Roadshow."
The Kazakh Ministry of Industry and Construction plans to deploy advanced drone solutions, focusing on operator training and regulatory measures for UAV usage. Central Asia saw an increase in drone use, particularly in agriculture and urban infrastructure.
Vice Minister Azamat emphasized Kazakhstan's commitment to the peaceful use of drones, stating, "We want productions only for our safety and self-defence reasons." He highlighted the importance of using drones solely for peaceful purposes and advocated for instilling this principle in the younger generation.
Azamat discussed Kazakhstan's collaboration with Korean universities to establish a drone academy in Kazakhstan. He stressed the need for legislation to govern drone use across industries, highlighting efforts to amend legislation for peaceful drone use.
JEI University in South Korea is promoting international exchange and cooperation in drone curriculum, including establishing a new curriculum at Kazakhstan universities. Azamat emphasized the importance of ethical drone technology evolution, stating, "It only depends on us how we raise children and how we teach them about drones," underscoring the shared responsibility of individuals and governments in guiding drone technology ethically.
