In a move towards sustainable transportation, Tajikistan has initiated a project aimed at introducing electronic public transport across the nation. Supported by The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the endeavor marks a step towards reducing carbon emissions and enhancing urban mobility.
The Ministry of Transport in Tajikistan has confirmed the launch of the project, which aligns with national strategies to electrify transport fleets. This initiative underscores the country's commitment to embracing cleaner energy sources and promoting environmentally friendly transportation options.
At the core of the project is the deployment of experimental networks of electric buses in Tajikistan, alongside three other participating countries. This move is expected to pave the way for a comprehensive transition towards electric public transport systems in the region.
A key aspect of the project involves the development of a regional roadmap tailored to Tajikistan's specific needs. This roadmap will focus on crucial aspects such as financing mechanisms and attracting foreign investment to facilitate the transition to electric public transport. By laying out a strategic framework, Tajikistan aims to streamline the adoption of electric vehicles while addressing logistical and financial challenges.
The timeline for the project spans from 2024 to 2026, during which various activities will be undertaken. These include national meetings, industry workshops involving stakeholders, the harmonization of electrification processes, and assessments of technical and gender-related needs. Additionally, the project will generate recommendations on financing strategies for public transport development and the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
As part of the implementation phase, Tajikistan plans to develop and launch a pilot electric bus project in one of its cities. This pilot initiative will serve as a practical demonstration of the feasibility and benefits of electric public transport, potentially setting the stage for broader adoption across the country.
