Tajikistan sees 1,300 electric vehicles imported in 2023
Tajikistan is experiencing a surge in electric vehicle (EV) imports, according to the country's Ministry of Transport's Department of Land Transport.
Over the first nine months of 2023, more than 1,300 EVs were imported, comprising 1,300 light-duty vehicles, 4 buses and minibuses, 9 electric trucks, and 2 electric forklifts. Notably, this marks a significant increase from the 767 EVs imported in the entire year of 2022.
This rise in EV imports aligns with Tajikistan's ambitions outlined in the "Electric Transport Development Program for 2023-2027." The country aims to elevate the share of electric vehicles to 20-30% of the total number of imported cars in the coming years. The program encompasses initiatives to boost imports, develop charging infrastructure, and strengthen the electric transport sector as a key component of the national economy.
To incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles, Tajikistan has introduced benefits for importers, including exemptions from customs duties. These measures are part of the country's broader strategy to combat air pollution and position itself as a regional hub for electric vehicle production.
Tajikistan's President, Rahmon, expressed confidence in the country's potential to become a center for electric vehicle manufacturing. The Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, emphasized the high power generation capacity and the significant use of electric vehicles in Tajikistan, highlighting the need for a shift from traditional fuel imports, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars annually, towards sustainable electric mobility.
