Turkmenistan making significant progress on Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) natural gas pipeline, which aims to supply 33bn cubic meters annually to South Asia, said Muhammetmyrat Amanov, CEO of TAPI Pipeline Company Limited (TPCL).
The Turkmenistan section of the pipeline is complete, according to a TPCL press release quoted by The Nation (Pakistan). Amanov emphasizes environmental sustainability by leveraging natural gas to reduce emissions significantly compared to coal and oil.
"In light of the ongoing project developments, Turkmenistan remains committed to upholding international law, fulfilling its obligations, and adhering to international norms and regulations."
The project’s focus is shifting to the Herat Offtake Strategy in Afghanistan. The TPCL CEO said that "it will provide early revenue streams and increase confidence among lenders."
The 800-km TAPI on Afghan territory is to cover the provinces of Herat, Farah, Nimroz, Helmand and Kandahar.
Experts told Daryo that the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which had lobbied for the project, has closed its office in Kabul pending international recognition of the Islamic Emirate. Security is another pressing issue. Taliban field commanders have already promised to raise 30,000 fighters to protect the TAPI infrastructure.
