In January-February 2024, 16.9 thousand foreign citizens entered Uzbekistan for business purposes, with Turkmenistan accounting for the largest number - 12.0 thousand, the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan reports.
Next came citizens of Tajikistan - 2,900, Afghanistan - 582, China - 260 and Turkey - 243. Last year, 46,500 of Uzbekistan's 70,400 foreign business travelers came from Turkmenistan.
Turkmen citizens have been required to obtain entry visas to cross the border since 1999, after Ashgabat decided to withdraw from the visa-free regime agreement with the CIS.
Turkmenistan shares its longest border with Uzbekistan - 1,700km. The neighboring countries are interested in expanding cross-border trade.
There are about 300,000 ethnic Uzbeks in Turkmenistan and more than 200,000 Turkmen in Uzbekistan. Both countries are interested in expanding cross-border trade.
