Over the past five years, Russia has been one of Turkmenistan's main trading partners, with annual trade turnover exceeding $1.6bn, according to the Russian embassy in Ashgabat.
Major companies such as Gazprom, Tatneft, Kamaz, the Vozrozhdenie group and others are active in the local market. There is also considerable potential for interregional cooperation. St Petersburg, Tatarstan and the Astrakhan region are active in this area.
"Russia attaches great importance to the development of friendly relations with Turkmenistan, which contribute to strengthening stability and security in Central Asia and the Caspian region," reads the press release on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The special nature of the partnership was established by the Interstate Treaty of 2017 and reaffirmed by the Declaration on Deepening the Strategic Partnership, signed in June 2022.
