Uzbekistan issued 71,117 MasterCard payment cards in 2M24. From 2022 to 2023, the country introduced 328,100 MasterCard cards into circulation, the Trend News Agency reports. While MasterCard sees a rise, Visa payment cards are also a significant part of the financial landscape, with 225,942 cards issued in 2023 and 102,158 distributed in 2022. As of January 1, an impressive 73.7 mn Visa payment cards were circulating in Uzbekistan.
The growth trajectory continued into early 2024, with the issuance of 71,117 cards between January and February alone, showing a marked increase from the previous year. The data from the Uzbek Open Data Portal indicates an annual increase of 23,353 payment cards, totalling over 47,764 issued cards.
Kyrgyzstan also saw a surge in the number of Visa cards, with figures increasing from 2 mn at the end of 2022 to approximately 2.96 mn in 2023, according to the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan. Projections suggest a leap to over 5 mn cards by the end of 2027.
Neighboring Kazakhstan reported 74.5 mn plastic cards in circulation as of January 1, 2024, with debit cards comprising the majority at 80.8% and credit cards at 16.4%. The remaining 2.8% includes debit cards with credit limits and prepaid cards.
The share of Visa payment cards in Tajikistan stood at 9.6% of the total number of payment cards as of 2024.
