Senate Committee reviews Uzbekistan's diplomatic successes: $362mn with Iran, $4.2mn with Egypt, and more

The Senate Committee on International Relations recently gathered to receive updates from Uzbekistan's ambassadors to Egypt, Israel, Iran, and Afghanistan. They deliberated on the advancements of agreements and investment projects initiated by the president of Uzbekistan, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis announced. The session was attended by a diverse array of government officials, representatives from state enterprises, and members of the media.

Held as part of the parliamentary oversight mechanism initiated after the president's directives in January 2024, the hearings delved into the timely execution and quality assurance of numerous investment ventures and trade pacts encapsulated within the bilateral "roadmaps" for enhanced cooperation.

A standout accomplishment was highlighted with Iran, where Uzbekistan intends to undertake 46 investment and trade agreements totaling $362mn. These investments have jumpstarted the modernization of vital sectors such as food and construction industries, regional infrastructure development, and the establishment of new industrial facilities.

In Israel, the direct involvement of the Uzbek Embassy facilitated the realization of four investment projects valued at $18.8mn, alongside the successful execution of 15 export contracts worth $14.5mn. Additionally, commendation was extended to the diplomatic mission's tireless efforts in ensuring the safety and evacuation of Uzbek citizens amidst tumultuous circumstances in the Middle East.

Egypt emerged as another prominent partner, as evidenced by the delivery of 40 tons of anti-hepatitis "C" and "B" medications worth $4.2mn in humanitarian aid, orchestrated by the Uzbek Embassy in Cairo.

Meanwhile, trade relations with Afghanistan showcased substantial growth, with exports surging by $100.4mn, marking a 113.3% increase compared to the previous year's figures, reaching $756.2mn.

The committee engaged in comprehensive discussions evaluating the primary objectives of diplomatic missions, scrutinizing the efficacy of governmental bodies overseeing roadmap implementation, and assessing endeavors in representing Uzbekistan's international initiatives and economic interests. Furthermore, a keen emphasis was placed on safeguarding the rights of Uzbek citizens abroad, underscoring the priorities for future diplomatic endeavors.
