Political scientist explains Israel’s motives behind Syrian consulate attack

On April 1, Israeli military aircraft launched a missile strike on the Iranian embassy and consulate located in the Syrian capital of Damascus. As a result of the attack, 7 Iranian military personnel, 3 Syrian civilians, and 1 Lebanese individual were killed. General Mohammad Zahidi of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed in the Israeli assault on the Iranian consulate, Reuters reports.

Smoke rises after what the Iranian media said was an Israeli strike on a building close to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria April 1, 2024.

    Answers from a Political Scientist

So, why did Israel bomb the Iranian embassy in Syria, violating international law? Is the purpose of the attack to provoke Iran into war? "Daryo" sought answers to these questions from Farhod Karimov.

Political scientist Farhod Karimov shed light on the strategic implications of the attack, stating, "The main goal of the attack was to destroy the General of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Mohammad Zahidi. Because Mohammad Zahidi was considered an important person connecting Iran with the whole region, especially with Hezbollah. Through this, Israel wants to reduce the influence of "Hezbollah" and Iran in the region."

The targeting of diplomatic personnel from a foreign country within the borders of another nation violates established international legal standards, says the expert. The potential repercussions of such actions are grave. Iran will likely respond in kind. The justification for this retaliation lies in Israel's blatant disregard for the principles of warfare. Presently, we observe Israel disregarding established international legal norms, possibly with backing from external forces, elaborated the political analyst.

    International Response

In the wake of the attack, Iran swiftly condemned the act as a violation of international law. Iran's UN ambassador urged the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action, asserting, "Iran reserves the legal and inalienable right to respond decisively to this terrorist attack."

Karimov offered insights into the potential consequences of the attack, remarking, "But this conflict will not lead to a major war in the region." He further emphasized the importance of Iran's appeal to the UN, stating, "By appealing to the UN, Iran is legitimizing its retaliatory strikes from an international point of view."

    Official Israeli Response Pending

While tensions simmer in the aftermath of the airstrike, the Israeli government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. The situation underscores the delicate balance of power in the region and the need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions.

To Reuters, an Israeli military spokesperson said: "We do not comment on reports in the foreign media," when asked about the strike.
