In a move towards addressing environmental challenges, Akylbek Zhaparov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Administration of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, spearheaded a ceremony for the construction of an eco-technological plant aimed at managing solid household waste effectively, Cabinet of Ministers reported.
The ceremony, held in Bishkek, marked the commencement of a pivotal project designed to mitigate environmental concerns that have plagued the capital in recent years. Noting the pressing need for sustainable waste management solutions, Zhaparov emphasized the government's commitment to tackling environmental issues head-on.
"The sanitary landfill in Bishkek needed a plant for processing household waste. Today we are starting the construction of a plant for the production of electricity with the disposal of solid household waste. Cleaning systems, living quarters, and sports facilities will also be built. This project is important to us. We wish success to the enterprise" Zhaparov noted.
The initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to combat pollution and enhance environmental sustainability across the nation. Over the past two years, concerted efforts have been made to curtail air pollution through various measures, including the adoption of eco-friendly transportation and the implementation of more than 600,000 tree-planting initiatives under the Jashyl Muras (Green Heritage) program.
Zhaparov underscored the government's prioritization of waste management infrastructure, highlighting plans to construct waste processing and incineration plants in multiple regions across the country. Substantial investments of KGS 135mn ($1.5mn) have been allocated by the Belarusian company towards similar projects in Karakol and Jalal-Abad, demonstrating a concerted effort to address environmental challenges at both local and national levels.
The ceremony witnessed the participation of key stakeholders, including Bishkek's Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev, Chinese Ambassador Du Dewen, and representatives from Hunan Junxin, a Chinese company involved in the project. Welcoming speeches were delivered, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the endeavor and the shared commitment to environmental stewardship.
As part of the construction project, provisions have been made for the establishment of waste incinerators, power generation facilities, purification systems, residential quarters, and sports amenities. The utilization of advanced technologies, including mechanical column furnace technology and multi-stage flue gas purification systems, underscores the project's emphasis on efficiency and sustainability.
Upon completion, the waste recycling plant is expected to process approximately 850 tons of waste per day, reducing the burden on existing landfill sites. With an anticipated completion date of November 2025, the project signifies a milestone in Kyrgyzstan's journey towards environmental resilience and sustainable development.
