In a recent meeting of the Coordination Commission for the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Kyrgyz Republic, Akylbek Zhaparov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Administration of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, underscored the strides made towards sustainable development through collaborative efforts between the Kyrgyz government and the United Nations (UN) system.
The meeting, attended by representatives from various UN agencies, was chaired by UN System Resident Coordinator Antje Grawe. Deliberations focused on reviewing the outcomes of joint work plans for 2023 and charting strategies for 2024.
Zhaparov highlighted the latest UN Development Programme (UNDP) report, published in March 2024, which revealed a notable increase in the Human Development Index (HDI) of the Kyrgyz Republic. The country's HDI for 2022 saw a rise of 0.7 percentage points, positioning it within the category of nations with a high level of human development and ranking 117th among 193 countries worldwide. This achievement aligns with the goals outlined in the National Development Program of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2026, specifically targeting a five-position improvement in the HDI ranking.
Looking ahead, Zhaparov emphasized the importance of the strategic cooperation program until 2027, aiming to foster closer collaboration between the Cabinet of Ministers and the UN system in the Kyrgyz Republic. This program, aligned with the Action Plan of the Cabinet of Ministers for 2024, will encompass the implementation of joint work plans for the year while advancing sustainable development agendas.
Moreover, Zhaparov revealed ongoing efforts by the government to develop the National Medium-Term Development Program of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2030, dubbed "New Economic Policy." This initiative, integrating economic, social, and environmental dimensions of development, will leverage the SDGs as a crucial framework.
UN System Resident Coordinator Antje Grawe reiterated her commitment to enhancing cooperation in SDG implementation within the Kyrgyz Republic. She disclosed that in 2023, collaborative projects exceeding 160, valued at $55mn, were successfully executed alongside government agencies. Furthermore, plans for 2024 entail the allocation of over $72mn towards project implementation, underscoring the unwavering dedication to sustainable development goals.
