Uzbekistan and Gambia formalized their bilateral ties through the signing of a Joint Communiqué on March 14 in New York City, Dunyo reports.
Official Representatives Seal the Agreement
Representing their respective governments, the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN, Ulugbek Lapasov, and the Permanent Representative of Gambia to the UN, Lamine Dibba, inked the document. This formal act solidified the commitment of both countries to foster collaboration across various international platforms, notably within the United Nations and its specialized agencies.
Emphasizing a shared enthusiasm for enhanced collaboration, the signatories expressed a keen interest in identifying mutually beneficial areas of cooperation. The agreement underscores a commitment to deepening ties and exploring avenues for fruitful engagement across diverse sectors.
Expansion of Diplomatic Reach
With this diplomatic accord, Gambia joins the ranks of 147 other nations with which Uzbekistan shares formal diplomatic relations. The establishment of ties with Gambia signifies a strategic step in expanding Uzbekistan's diplomatic footprint, particularly in the West African region.
The signing of the Joint Communiqué follows a series of diplomatic engagements between Uzbekistan and Gambia. Notably, a meeting between Uzbekistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakhtiyor Saidov, and Gambia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Affairs of Gambians Abroad, Mamadou Tangara, held on December 20, 2023, laid the groundwork for bilateral cooperation discussions.
Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan has forged new ties with Belize and Liechtenstein, further bolstering its global engagement strategy.
