Global Food Security Concerns
Addressing the nation, President Rahmon underscored the gravity of the global food security situation expected in 2024. Citing observations and analysis, he pointed out that over 80 countries worldwide are grappling with crop failures and food shortages. Against this backdrop, he urged citizens to adopt a rational and efficient approach in utilizing available resources, leveraging the country's favorable natural environment, particularly its water and land resources.
President Rahmon highlighted the exacerbating factors contributing to the global food crisis, including climate change, drought, and political instability. He expressed concern over the diminishing water resources in Tajikistan, revealing that the country is experiencing a 70% reduction in snowfall and rainfall compared to the previous year.
Earlier, it was reported that on the International Day of Actions in Defense of Rivers and Against Dams, concerns are mounting over the potential exacerbation of the water crisis in Central Asia due to the construction of new dams. The Ecological Coalition of Rivers without Boundaries (Rivers Without Borders) has issued a stark warning, highlighting the adverse ecological consequences that could unfold if current development plans proceed unchecked.
