Over 200 buses collectively emit approximately 10 tons of harmful substances into the atmosphere each month in the Namangan region of Uzbekistan, thus urging an urgent response from the government, Uzbekistan 24 TV channel reveals.
Strategic Partnership with Chinese Manufacturer
As a result, Namangan took decisive steps towards sustainable transportation solutions. A significant development in this initiative is the agreement signed between the city administration and a leading Chinese electric bus manufacturing company. As part of this agreement, 30 electric buses are set to be launched in Namangan throughout 2024.
The transition to electric buses will be executed in phases, with the first phase involving the deployment of 15 electric buses to begin operating in the city. Ulugbek Otakhanov, chief specialist of the Namangan city administration, emphasized that the introduction of these eco-friendly vehicles is a proactive measure aimed at curbing air pollution.
Notably, these electric buses are projected to serve over 100,000 people daily, significantly reducing the reliance on traditional buses that contribute to harmful emissions.
Diverse Funding Sources for Sustainable Development
To facilitate the acquisition of electric buses, multiple avenues of funding have been pursued. In addition to the partnership with the Chinese company Geely New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group, Asia Industrial is importing 20 electric buses through a state preferential loan amounting to UZS 1.4bn ($112,461). This concerted effort underscores the commitment of both public and private entities to invest in sustainable infrastructure and address environmental challenges.
Earlier, it was reported that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during a visit to the Andijan industrial hub in the Andijan region, has initiated the implementation of a $100mn electric bus assembly project, naming them vehicles "Silk Road Buses."
