The 55th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission kicked off on February 27 at the UN Headquarters, gathering representatives from around the globe to discuss pivotal issues in the realm of statistics. Leading the Uzbek delegation was Dr. Bakhodir Abdusalomovich Begalov, the Director of the Statistics Agency under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Statistics Agency reported.
Dr. Begalov took the opportunity at the session to highlight the progressive reforms underway in Uzbekistan's statistical landscape. Among the reforms discussed were recent changes within the statistical system, measures enhancing the transparency and openness of statistical data, and the adoption of advanced quality management systems. Furthermore, Uzbekistan's efforts in aligning statistical processes with international methodologies and standards, monitoring national Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and advancing gender statistics were also spotlighted.
The session provided a platform to unveil the achievements of Uzbekistan in various international statistical rankings. In 2023, Uzbekistan surged to the 30th position among 195 countries in the Open Data Inventory (ODIN) ranking, maintaining its premier status in Central Asia with a score of 70 points. Additionally, Uzbekistan secured the 69th spot out of 166 countries in the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) SDG Index, boasting a score of 71.1.
Moreover, the country emerged as one of the top 20 nations globally in the "Open Gender Data Index," as per the latest report from the Open Data Watch organization, with a notable score of 69.7. Furthermore, Uzbekistan's commendable practices in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals earned recognition, with the nation listed among the 87 countries with exemplary approaches on the official webpage of the UN Statistics Division.
Moreover, Uzbekistan's initiatives in regional statistical cooperation, particularly with the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), were lauded during the session. The delegation actively engaged in discussions on the latest international methodologies and best practices in statistics, contributing to the exchange of knowledge and expertise.
Crucially, bilateral discussions between Uzbekistan's delegation and prominent international organizations, and national statistical services yielded promising outcomes. Agreements were reached on enhancing cooperation with various entities, including the UN Department of Statistics, Open Data Watch, and statistical offices of countries such as Canada, Malaysia, and Korea.
Of significant note was the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Statistics Agency of Uzbekistan and Malaysia's Department of Statistics, underscoring a commitment to mutual collaboration in the statistical domain. Furthermore, agreements were reached for conducting a comprehensive assessment of Uzbekistan's statistical system in cooperation with Eurostat and the European Free Trade Association.
Looking ahead, a delegation from Uzbekistan's Statistics Agency is slated to visit Korea's National Statistical Office in May 2024 to bolster collaboration through knowledge exchange and capacity-building initiatives.
