The Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) recently organized an international roundtable on Uzbekistan's National Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan.
The event brought together over 70 delegates, including experts from renowned international organizations such as UNDP, WHO, ILO, and the World Bank.
The roundtable served as a pivotal moment to assess progress toward achieving SDGs, exchange best practices, and strategize ways to expedite these goals. Notable figures, including Ms. Consuelo Vidal Bruce (UN Resident Coordinator a.i. in Uzbekistan), Mr. Anas Fayyad Qarman (UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Uzbekistan), and Obid Khakimov (Director of CERR), delivered opening remarks. They highlighted Uzbekistan's active role in the global SDG initiative.
Obid Khakimov acknowledged the halfway point in Uzbekistan's journey towards SDGs and emphasized its alignment with the national agenda, led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
"At the General Debate of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated his commitment to continuing the "policy of creating the New Uzbekistan, which is a law-governed, secular, democratic and social state." The president highlighted the irreversible reforms in Uzbekistan, put forward a number of initiatives aimed at solving the most pressing issues on the global and regional agenda," Director of CERR said.
Experts commended the country's reforms, recognizing their alignment with sustainable development objectives. They noted shifts in financial priorities to support SDGs.
Participants also discussed global economic changes necessitating a reevaluation of financing priorities for SDGs. The challenging global landscape poses a threat to Uzbekistan's SDG progress, emphasizing the need for new initiatives to accelerate achievement. Uzbekistan actively seeks investments, technology, and stronger regional ties to ensure water, energy, and food security.
Anas Qarman, UNDP Resident Representative a.i., emphasized that SDG commitment extends beyond targets to improving people's well-being.
"Let us remember that the way towards achieving the SDGs is not just about reaching targets but reshaping the very nature of development,” the UNDP representative said.
As Uzbekistan reaches the midway point in its SDG journey, adjustments, including support from developed nations, private sector development, and public-private partnerships, are considered essential for reshaping the nature of development.
