Turkmenistan's Mejlis (Parliament) Speaker Dunyagozel Gulmanova met with Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi in Tokyo, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reports.
The parties exchanged views on bilateral trade and economic relations and noted "the need to continue working on promising projects, taking into account the implementation of large-scale and long-term programs in Turkmenistan with the participation of Japanese companies".
Gulmanova also met with the Secretary General of the Japanese-Turkmen Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, member of the House of Councilors of Japan, Shimpei Matsushita.
Experts told Daryo that the impetus for business cooperation between the two countries was given by the official visit of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Ashgabat in October 2015, which resulted in the conclusion of investment agreements worth $18bn.
Japanese companies have implemented major projects in the gas chemical industry and gas turbine power generation, as well as supplied specialised equipment for projects in the fuel and energy complex, transport and water resources management.
The sides are discussing the opening of a Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) office in Ashgabat and the holding of a joint business forum.
