The UN World Food Program has sounded the alarm on the dire humanitarian situation unfolding in Afghanistan, with one-third of the country's population on the brink of starvation, Hasht-e Subh Daily, reports.
Widespread Poverty and Hunger
The current population of Afghanistan is almost 43mn, which means that roughly 14.3mn people are in a dire situation.
WFP stated: "Afghanistan is not 100 people, it's 43mn people and a third of them are battling against starvation"
Adding to the country's woes, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has reported a concerning surge in severe respiratory infections in Afghanistan. With 160,000 cases registered in January alone, the figures indicate a 16% increase compared to the previous year. Disturbingly, 62% of the afflicted individuals are children under the age of five.
Access to Medical Services
Compounding the health crisis is the lack of access to medical services for a significant portion of the Afghan population. Approximately 9.5mn people in the country reside in areas where medical facilities are either scarce or entirely unavailable, exacerbating the challenges faced in combating the spread of diseases and providing essential healthcare services.
