During his official visit to Rome, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with the Executive Director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), Cindy McCain, to discuss the ongoing partnership between Kazakhstan and WFP in addressing the global challenge of food security, Akorda reported.
President Tokayev highlighted the importance of the meeting, stating that it provided an excellent opportunity to reinforce the collaboration between Kazakhstan and the WFP in tackling the critical issue of global food security. He outlined the measures undertaken by Kazakhstan to contribute to international efforts, including its support through organizations such as the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) and the United Nations.
In 2023, Kazakhstan played a significant role in humanitarian assistance, providing $9.2mn to six countries. Notably, in response to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, Kazakhstan donated $1mn to the Palestinian people and delivered two shipments of humanitarian aid. The country also extended financial assistance to Afghanistan, Turkey, Pakistan, and other nations affected by natural disasters.
President Tokayev emphasized the importance of the international community's continued efforts to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. He expressed his concerns and called for sustained global engagement in addressing the challenges faced by the Afghan people.
Providing insight into Kazakhstan's commitment to regional development, President Tokayev revealed that efforts were underway to establish a UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty. The center's mandate would involve coordinating UN activities in Central Asia to strengthen regional peace, security, and sustainable development.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President Tokayev extended an invitation to Cindy McCain to participate in the upcoming Astana International Forum, underlining the significance of continued collaboration on global issues.
This meeting follows President Tokayev's discussions with Giorgia Meloni, Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Italy, where the leaders emphasized the robust ties between their nations. The discussions covered various sectors, including trade, economics, investment, energy, transport and logistics, agriculture, culture, humanitarian efforts, education, green energy, and air communications. A Joint Statement was adopted, reflecting the commitment of both nations to further expanding their collaboration.
