A ceremony was held in the Akhal region of Turkmenistan to award a cash prize of $1mn to the Ak Bugday etrap (district) that will be the most advanced in the country in 2023, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
The celebrations came ahead of events to mark the International Turkic Culture Organisation's (TURKSOY) designation of the region's ancient city of Anau as the cultural capital of the Turkic world in 2024.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said in his address that "the achievements of the Ak Bugday district in terms of living standards, economic and cultural development demonstrate the hard work of compatriots to increase the authority of the Fatherland".
The competition is held every year. Indicators of the implementation of the National Programme for the transformation of the social and living conditions of the population, the fulfilment of contractual obligations for the production of wheat and cotton, and the construction of social and cultural facilities are taken into account when the results are summarised.
Also important are achievements in the field of employment, the organisation of cultural recreation and the participation of the population in sport.
