Turkmenistan invites the governments of interested countries to establish a Global Energy Security and Sustainability Cooperation Alliance. This was announced by Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov at the World Government Summit in Dubai (UAE).
Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying that "in the near future, at the global level, it is necessary to concentrate efforts aimed at solving the following tasks:
first, - the creation of a new international platform for cooperation between governments, energy companies and financial institutions;
second, - ensuring the exchange of best practices on energy risk management;
third, - development of effective tools to address global and regional disruptions in energy supplies;
fourth, - to stimulate joint investments in strategic energy infrastructure projects of international significance;
fifth, - promote the creation of transparent and competitive energy markets."
Turkmenistan, which has the world's fourth largest gas reserves, sells the fuel to China, Russia and Uzbekistan.
Galkynysh, the world's largest onshore gas field in terms of reserves, and the nearby Yashlar and Garakel fields are estimated to hold around 27tn cubic metres of gas.
Ashgabat is keen to broaden the geography of energy supplies and to partner with leading oil and gas companies and reputable financial structures.
In particular, the commissioning of the East-West internal gas pipeline, with an annual capacity of 30bn cubic metres, united all the country's gas pipelines into a single system. This has created the conditions for the flow of Turkmen energy resources across the Caspian Sea to international markets, including Europe via the Caucasus and Turkey.
Of particular importance in this regard is the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline.
The Turkmen authorities believe that this pipeline will contribute to solving such important issues as the peaceful reconstruction of neighbouring Afghanistan, the improvement of its socio-economic structure and the creation of new jobs.
