Akbar Djuraev from Uzbekistan becomes absolute champion of Asia in weightlifting
Weightlifter from Uzbekistan Akbar Djuraev emerged as the standout performer at the Asian Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, securing an impressive trio of gold medals and solidifying his status as the continent's premier weightlifter. The National Olympic Committee's press service lauded Juraev's exceptional achievements at the prestigious event.
The tournament's second day witnessed further success for Uzbekistan as female athletes excelled in their respective weight categories. Nigora Suvonova, competing in the -87 kg class, demonstrated remarkable strength by clinching the gold medal in the snatch with a lift of 101 kg. Additionally, her performance in the clean and jerk event, where she lifted 128 kg, earned her a commendable second place finish. With a combined total of 229 kg, Suvonova secured another silver medal for the national team.
Meanwhile, Tursuna Jabborova, competing in the +87 kg category, showcased her prowess by securing a bronze medal with a lift of 116 kg in the snatch exercise.
“Having completed the snatch exercise with 180 kg, Juraev lifted 220 kg in the clean and jerk, gaining a total of 400 kg. None of the competitors managed to beat these results. Thus, Akbar Djuraev had no equal in his weight category,” the NOC reports.
With three gold medals to his name, Djuraev added yet another title to his illustrious career achievements.
The Asian Weightlifting Championship, which commenced on February 3 in the capital city of Uzbekistan, serves as a crucial platform for athletes to earn valuable ranking points for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
