The Uzbekistan Football Association (AFU) has announced the lifetime suspension of three referees. The referees, Khusan Muzaffarov, Obid Jumayev, and Jasur Rustamov, have been found guilty of accepting bribes to influence match outcomes.
Scandal unveiled
The Special Inspectorate of the AFU discovered that on March 22 of the previous year, Shukhrat Muminov, the sports director of FC "Kokand-1912", had bribed Muzaffarov. Further investigations revealed that during the summer, Muzaffarov, Jumaev, and Rustamov had all received money from Muminov in exchange for refereeing in favour of the Kokand club.
Fallout
In addition to the lifetime suspension of the three referees, the AFU has also decided to suspend Shukhrat Muminov, the sports director of Kokand-1912, for life. This decision underscores the AFU’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport and sends a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated.
Wider problem
This is not the first time that the AFU has had to deal with match-fixing scandals. In the past, players and referees have faced similar charges, leading to lifetime bans and fines. The AFU has been working closely with FIFA, AFC, Sportradar, and other relevant organizations to detect and prevent match-fixing.
