Paris 2024 Olympics targets 50% CO2 reduction aiming for sustainability

Paris 2024 Olympics targets 50% CO2 reduction aiming for sustainability

The anticipation for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics is marked by high expectations, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) emphasizing sustainability, inclusivity, and gender equality as top priorities. The organizers are determined to make the event a model for eco-friendly and socially responsible sporting competitions, DW reported.

    Sustainability Goals

Paris 2024 has set ambitious sustainability goals, focusing on reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by nearly half compared to previous Olympic Games. With an emphasis on minimizing travel, 95% of the venues are located within a 10-kilometer radius, ensuring that athletes can reach their destinations within 30 minutes. The use of existing facilities like the Parc des Princes and Roland Garros further promotes sustainability.

Renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power, will contribute to powering the Games, while environmentally friendly transportation options such as subways and bicycles are encouraged. The organizers are committed to offsetting unavoidable emissions through projects like reforestation, supporting local initiatives to combat climate change.

The extensive cleansing of the Seine, where aquatic events will be held, aims to make the river accessible for swimming post-Olympics. The Olympic Village in Seine-Saint-Denis boasts a 47% reduction in CO2 emissions through innovative construction methods, including the use of wood, low-carbon concrete, and geothermal energy for heating and cooling.

    Climate Protection Measures

Paris is taking substantial steps to enhance its environmental profile. The city has implemented various initiatives, such as converting parking spaces into green areas, building cycle paths, constructing anti-noise walls, and renovating buildings to improve climate-friendliness. Lowering speed limits on highways and restricting buses from the city center are additional measures aimed at reducing pollution.

During the Games, sustainable and low-meat catering featuring local and seasonal products will be prioritized to minimize waste. Reusable drinking bottles and drinking fountains aim to cut single-use plastic consumption by half.

    Security Concerns

With an expected 10 mn visitors during the games, security is a paramount concern. Special legislation has been enacted to implement comprehensive video surveillance using artificial intelligence. AI-controlled cameras and drones will monitor public spaces and stadiums to detect suspicious activities. Motorized traffic restrictions and temporary closures of metro stations are planned to enhance security.

Critics argue that these security measures may infringe on citizens' rights, with concerns about privacy and the potential long-term impact on freedoms beyond the Olympic period. The requirement for QR codes and visitor registration for residents in restricted areas has also faced opposition.

    Public Reception and Criticisms

While the organizers have outlined a comprehensive plan for sustainability and security, local residents express skepticism about the economic benefits and potential negative impacts on air quality and traffic. Some fear that the housing developments may not address the city's housing shortage adequately.

Criticism extends to the lack of air conditioning in the Olympic Village, particularly in the face of potential heatwaves. Politicians, human rights activists, and environmentalists are concerned about the overall impact on citizens' rights, data protection, and the environment.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, also referred to as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad or Paris 2024, is a forthcoming global multi-sport event set to occur from July 26 to August 11, 2024, in France. Paris serves as the primary host city, accompanied by 16 additional cities across metropolitan France, along with a subsidiary site located in Tahiti—an island within the French overseas territory and overseas collectivity of French Polynesia.

Earlier Daryo reported that renowned as the City of Lights, Paris is undergoing a notable metamorphosis in anticipation of hosting the highly awaited 2024 Olympic Games. Amidst the hustle of widespread construction endeavors to meet the logistical requirements of this global spectacle, the Paris city council is seizing this moment to underscore its commitment to environmental sustainability and foster a more eco-friendly urban landscape.
