"Russian Railways" (RZD) plans to open an office in Turkmenistan and establish passenger services on electric trains within the country, reports Turkmenistan Habarlar Portaly.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between representatives of the Turkmen Railways Agency and the RZD holding company.
Turkmenistan joined the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC) last year, which has been promoted by Russia, India and Iran since 2000.
The two sides discussed the development of transport along its eastern route and the implementation of a number of infrastructure initiatives.
The list of projects under discussion includes the launch of a new Ashgabat-Arkadag railway line, which will run an electric passenger train, and the reconstruction of a car repair plant in Kyzyl-Arvat.
RZD signed a memorandum of understanding with the Turkmen side in 2021, offering its technologies with the possibility of localising the production of some units and assemblies in the country's enterprises.
At that time, two major projects for the construction and electrification of the Turkmenabat-Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi (1,150 km) and Ashgabat-Dashoguz (522 km) railways were discussed.
