The Taliban recently announced that it has earned $25.5mn from oil sales. The oil, approximately 60,000 tons of crude, was produced at the Kashkari field in the Sari-Pul province, located in the Amu Darya basin.
The oil was purchased by the Sultan Salahuddin Company, which won the corresponding tender. Interestingly, the selling price was 24.8% lower than the world average price.
Currently, the production level at the Kashkari field is around 1,100 tons per day. However, plans are underway to increase this to 2,000 tons per day within the year.
Infrastructure Development
Shahabuddin Delawar, the Acting Minister of Minerals and Petroleum of Afghanistan has also announced the construction of reservoirs at the Kashkari field. These reservoirs will have a capacity of 50,000 tons of oil, a significant increase from the previously stated capacity of 6,000 tons.
Future Prospects: Herat Oil and Gas Basin
Delawar also revealed the imminent tender for the Herat oil and gas basin. This basin, covering an area of 23,000 km², is a significant addition to Afghanistan’s hydrocarbon resources. The development of this basin, along with the existing Kashkari field and three other basins, is expected to transform Afghanistan into a net exporter of hydrocarbons.
