Timur Sultangaziyev, the First Vice Minister of Health of Kazakhstan, actively participated in a Ministerial meeting focused on the sustainability of health systems on January 28, the Ministry of Healthcare reported. The gathering included key figures such as the OECD Director-General, deputy prime ministers, ministers, and vice-ministers of health from OECD member countries and observers. The central theme of the meeting revolved around "Improving policies for more sustainable health systems."
Addressing the assembly, Sultangaziyev highlighted the crucial role of robust and resilient health systems, especially in responding promptly to emerging health threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the significance of primary health care in enabling nations to overcome new challenges, implement urgent measures to prevent healthcare system overload and provide affordable, high-quality medical care to the population while executing preventive measures.
Sultangaziyev shed light on Kazakhstan's efforts to strengthen primary health care, resulting in increased efficiency at the primary level of medical care. He shared that the introduction and successful operation of multidisciplinary teams at the primary healthcare level, comprising a general practitioner as the main link, along with nurses, a social worker, and a psychologist, have ensured the continuity and coherence of medical care throughout the treatment process.
The First Vice Minister underscored Kazakhstan's special attention to developing medical and medical-social personnel to guarantee the sustainability of the healthcare system. He detailed ongoing initiatives, including the gradual increase in salaries for medical professionals, an upsurge in grants for training medical workers, the provision of social guarantees, and the development of a law on the professional responsibility of medical workers.
Sultangaziyev also recalled recent global health discussions held in Kazakhstan during the Global Conference on Primary Health Care in October 2023. The conference marked the 45th anniversary of the adoption of the Alma-Ata Declaration and the 5th anniversary of the Astana Declaration on Primary Health Care. Additionally, these vital issues were deliberated upon during the 73rd session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe.
In his concluding remarks, Sultangaziyev shared the Head of State's announcement of Kazakhstan's initiative to establish a Coalition of Countries on Primary Health Care. He called on other nations to join the coalition, emphasizing the shared goal of promoting health principles, prevention, and the collaborative development of recommendations for primary healthcare advancement.
"We call on countries to support Kazakhstan’s initiative to create a Coalition of Countries on Primary Health Care," reiterated the First Vice Minister of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
