Pictures of Ashgabat at night taken from the International Space Station (ISS) have been published on the Roscosmos State Corporation social networking site.
The picture was taken by Oleg Kononenko, commander of the team of Russian cosmonauts, who is a native of Turkmenistan.
"Today in the lens - the mysterious and charming capital of Turkmenistan. White, yellow, red and green - a whole palette of shades of light piercing the darkness. The bright lights of the city merge into the arteries of the streets, resembling a great constellation".
Kononenko holds the titles of Hero of the Russian Federation and Hero of Turkmenistan. He was born in 1964 in Turkmenabat, Lebap region, where he graduated from high school. He later enrolled at an aviation institute in Kharkov, Ukraine, and after some time moved to Russia.
He made his first flight on a Soyuz spacecraft in April 1996. Oleg is now the record holder for the longest stay on board the ISS.
