The Ministry of Ecology and the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan have announced their intention to develop a national platform and mobile application for monitoring air quality.
Monitoring air quality
The proposed platform will utilize the Comprehensive Air Pollution Index (API), which is currently used to monitor air quality in the country. The API is calculated based on the average annual concentration of pollutants.
Study on diseases caused by polluted air
In 2023, a study began to investigate diseases caused by polluted air in the Surkhandarya, Bukhara, Khorezm regions, and Karakalpakstan. This study is part of the broader project aimed at improving air quality monitoring and understanding the health impacts of air pollution.
Comparison with WHO standards
The Ministry of Environment stated that the country’s air pollution levels are currently being compared with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). As per WHO, the average annual amount of PM 2.5 should not exceed 5 μg/m³, and the average daily amount should not exceed 15 μg/m³.
However, due to the geographical and climatic features of Uzbekistan, achieving these standards is challenging. The Ministry noted that no country in the world meets the standards recommended by the WHO, and many countries have adopted their own national standards.
