The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has delivered 131 tons of food aid, valued at $425,000, to Uzbekistan. This aid will be distributed across more than 120 health and social protection institutions, providing 6.5mn portions of food to the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
Targeting the Most Vulnerable
The beneficiaries of this aid include patients in tuberculosis and mental health institutions, children with disabilities, and the elderly. The food aid is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of nutrition and ensure that the most vulnerable segments of the population have access to enough, safe, and nutritious food.
A Continuing Partnership
David Hoffman, director of USAID’s mission in Uzbekistan, highlighted the ongoing partnership between Uzbekistan and the United States. He stated, "This program builds on the ongoing partnership between Uzbekistan and the United States to improve the quality of nutrition and ensure that the most vulnerable segments of the population have enough, safe and nutritious food to live healthy and productive lives".
Long-Term Investment
This new humanitarian aid to Uzbekistan is part of a long-term U.S. investment worth more than $122mn in support of the country’s health sector. Over the past 20 years, the total aid provided by the U.S. government to the country has exceeded $1bn.
