Tajikistan has earmarked a substantial amount of funds, totaling TJS 9bn (approximately $829mn), for the restoration of energy facilities in the country, as announced by President Emomali Rahmon in his recent parliamentary address. Rahmon emphasized the critical role of this financial allocation in preventing a nationwide electricity shortage.
During his address, President Rahmon also disclosed plans for the commissioning of the third reactor at the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in Tajikistan, set to take place in 2025. Additionally, he outlined the nation's ambitious shift to alternative energy sources, aiming for full adoption by 2032. Highlighting Tajikistan's commitment to environmentally friendly practices, Rahmon proudly stated that the country ranks 6th globally in terms of green energy production.
The government of Tajikistan had previously announced its intention to allocate around TJS 5bn (approximately $460mn) in 2024 for the implementation of the Rogun HPP project. The construction of the Rogun HPP has been financed exclusively from state funds thus far, with over TJS 35bn ($3.5bn) allocated from the state budget since 2008.
In a notable development in 2022, a consortium was established to secure funding from international donors for the Rogun HPP construction, with coordination by the World Bank. This collaborative effort reflects Tajikistan's commitment to leveraging external resources for the advancement of its hydroelectric power initiatives.
Earlier it was reported that the Eurasian Development Bank has declared its intention to participate in the financing of the Rogun HPP construction project in Tajikistan in 2024.
