Uzbek Deputy Foreign Minister Rakhmatulla Nurimbetov met with Turkmen Ambassador Shadurdy Meredov. The Uzbek Foreign Ministry said in a press release that the talks focused on prospects for cooperation in trade and investment, transport and logistics, culture and tourism, as well as interaction at international platforms.
The parties exchanged views on the schedule and organisational aspects of joint events at various levels planned for this year.
Meredov took up his post in Tashkent in August 2023. The Turkmen diplomat previously headed his country's embassy in Kyrgyzstan. The Treaty on Strategic Partnership of 6 March 2017 and the Declaration on Deepening Strategic Partnership of 21 October 2022 were the basic documents that laid a solid foundation for interaction between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
Experts told Daryo that the volume of bilateral trade has increased more than fivefold in recent years, reaching almost $1bn.
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have agreed to build a joint trade centre on their common border and share the Amu Darya, the largest river in the Central Asian region.
As well as buying Turkmen energy resources, Uzbekistan is also an important transit country, with two major gas pipelines crossing its territory, through which Turkmenistan exports natural gas to China and Russia. Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan was studying the possibility of signing a long-term contract for the purchase of Turkmen gas.
