In a recent report, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, estimating that 23.7mn people in the country will require assistance to survive in 2024.
The nation, plagued by decades of conflict, frequent natural disasters, pervasive poverty, and violence against women, is facing ongoing crises exacerbated by various factors.
OCHA emphasized the vulnerability of women as the most at-risk group in Afghanistan at present. The World Food Program, in a related announcement, disclosed that in 2023, its trucks successfully delivered 350,000 tons of food across Afghanistan, underscoring the critical need for sustained humanitarian efforts in the region.
Recently, it was reported that South Korea has extended a humanitarian helping hand to Afghanistan by donating $1mn through the United Nations' Humanitarian Coordination Office (OCHA). This contribution aims to address the pressing humanitarian needs in Afghanistan amidst ongoing challenges.
In addition to this recent contribution, South Korea has consistently supported Afghanistan's humanitarian efforts by contributing over $18mn to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund since 2014.
Earlier, Australia has stepped forward to provide much-needed assistance. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that Australia is contributing $5.1mn in humanitarian aid to support the people of Afghanistan.
