In Afghanistan's Nangarhar region, four children lost their lives when a hand grenade exploded at the residence of Ghulam Jilani Hanafi, the head of education for the Taliban.
The blast occurred in the Hesarak district, resulting in the fatalities of Jilani's four daughters, who were schoolchildren aged between three and ten years old.
Reports indicate that Jilani and his wife also sustained injuries in the explosion. As per Farhad Ahmed Stanikzai, spokesperson for the Nangarhar Education Department, the hand grenade was thrown by unknown individuals, and the motives behind this attack remain unclear.
Earlier, it was reported that a minibus exploded in a predominantly Shiite Muslim neighborhood in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, resulting in the death of at least two civilians and injuring 14 others, as per a Taliban official on January 6. This incident marks the first attack in the country in 2024.
The Islamic State group’s affiliate in the region, known for targeting Shiite schools, hospitals, and mosques, has previously claimed responsibility for similar attacks in the same area. In November, a minibus explosion in the same area of Kabul resulted in seven fatalities and left 20 others wounded.
