President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in his New Year greeting addressed to his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov expressed confidence that the strategic partnership between the two states will rise to a new level.
"Thanks to our resolute joint actions and the intensity of mutual visits, the past year has seen great practical results in comprehensively deepening the multifaceted and long-term relations between our friendly peoples united by a common history, language, religion and culture".
Turkmenistan ranks sixth among Uzbekistan's foreign trade partners. That's because Uzbekistan has switched to direct energy purchases from Turkmenistan and cross-border trade has intensified.
Since the beginning of the year, trade turnover between the countries has reached almost $1.0bn, five times more than in 2017. Turkmenistan's border with Uzbekistan is the longest among its neighbours - around 1,700km.
The two countries recently agreed to share the region's largest river (by volume), the Amu Darya, and to establish a border trade centre. This was the result of Berdimuhamedov's state visit to Uzbekistan in mid-July 2022 and his talks with Mirziyoyev, who described the water agreement as "historic".
