The World Health Organization (WHO) is working with the Government of Turkmenistan on pandemic preparedness, WHO spokesperson Egor Zaitsev said in a local press article.
"Work is underway with the Government of Turkmenistan in the areas of digitalisation of the health system, reducing the burden of noncommunicable diseases and their risk factors, pandemic preparedness, combating antimicrobial resistance, and maintaining high levels of immunization of the population against vaccine-preventable infections."
The article also notes that Turkmenistan has made tangible progress in combating several infectious diseases, while maintaining its status as one of the few countries free of malaria and polio.
Furthermore, the country has met regional targets for hepatitis B control through immunization, which is important for achieving the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat.
The WHO country office in Turkmenistan was established in Ashgabat in November 1995. Its role is to provide advice, act as a focal point for technical cooperation, develop standards and agreements, and ensure the coordination and application of public health measures in times of crisis.
