The Pentagon’s Security Cooperation Agency has announced that the U.S. State Department has greenlit an emergency sale to Israel, Interfax reports. The sale includes M107 155mm artillery shells and related equipment, with a total value of approximately $147.5mn.
“The United States is committed to Israel’s security, and it is vital to US national interests to help Israel develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability. The proposed sale is consistent with these goals,” the agency said.
Bypassing traditional protocols
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has notified Congress of an emergency. This situation necessitates bypassing the traditional deadline for notifying Congress of foreign military sales. The aim is to expedite the delivery of the shells, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Depleting Pentagon stockpiles
The shells for this sale will be supplied directly from Pentagon stockpiles. Recent conflicts have significantly depleted these stockpiles. From March to September, the US supplied more than 800,000 155mm artillery rounds to Ukraine. The production capacity in September was only 14,400 rounds per month. This gap between utilization and production could significantly deplete reserves over time.
