Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, acknowledged the country’s struggle to minimize civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He attributed this difficulty to Hamas, accusing them of indifference towards Palestinian safety and even firing at those seeking refuge.
The conflict, which began after a deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, has resulted in over 11,500 deaths, according to the health ministry of Hamas. The attack led to approximately 1,200 fatalities and around 240 hostages taken back to Gaza when Hamas militants infiltrated the border and launched assaults on Israeli communities and military bases.
Netanyahu expressed Israel’s intention to eradicate Hamas in Gaza while striving to keep civilian casualties to a minimum. He claimed that despite efforts to evacuate civilians from danger zones, including dropping leaflets and making phone calls, Hamas has been obstructing these attempts.
The Prime Minister also addressed the controversial military raids on Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility. He suggested that Israeli hostages were being held there, which prompted the incursion. However, no hostages were found upon entry. Despite this, Netanyahu maintained that there was substantial evidence of the presence of “terrorist chieftains and terrorists” who had allegedly used patients as human shields.
The Israeli military reported the discovery of two hostages’ bodies near the hospital. As the conflict continues, the international community watches closely, awaiting further developments.
