The citrus market in Uzbekistan has seen a significant surge, with imports increasing from 8,400 tons to 11,400 tons over the past 11 months, the Statistics Agency reports. This growth is largely attributed to the increasing popularity of Iranian oranges, which have become the most common in the republic.
Leading suppliers
Iran
Iran leads the pack, exporting 4,900 tons of oranges to Uzbekistan. The country has emerged as a dominant force in the Uzbekistani orange market, steadily boosting its exports since 2021.
Egypt
Egypt holds the second position, supplying 2,300 tons of oranges. In the first five months of the current season (October 2022 – February 2023), Egypt exported almost 25,000 tons of oranges to the main countries of Southeast Asia.
South Africa
South Africa ranks third, exporting 2,200 tons of oranges to Uzbekistan. The country’s orange production is forecasted to grow 3% in 2022 – 23, to almost 1.7 mn metric tons.
Comparative pricing
Interestingly, despite the increase in imports, the price of these fruits in Uzbekistan is lower than in several other countries. As of December 8, 2023, the average wholesale price in the Republic of Uzbekistan was $1.06. This is lower than in Moldova ($1.24), Russia ($1.35), Poland ($1.37), Tajikistan ($1.46), and Ukraine ($1.80).
