In the span of two years (2021-2022), Uzbekistan has seen a significant number of its civil servants prosecuted for crimes related to bribery. A total of 486 citizens were implicated, shedding light on the pervasive issue of corruption within the country.
Breakdown of сorruption сases
The individuals prosecuted comprised a mix of officials from non-governmental organizations, employees of state bodies, and officials of state bodies. Specifically, 15 officials were from non-governmental organizations, 88 were employees of state bodies, and the majority, 382, were officials of state bodies.
Corruption across different spheres
Interestingly, the corruption cases were not limited to one particular sector but spanned across various spheres. The field of preschool education saw the highest number of crimes, with 62 cases reported. This is a concerning statistic, given the importance of education in shaping the future of the nation.
Healthcare and public education followed closely, with 53 and 49 cases, respectively. The healthcare sector’s corruption cases are particularly alarming, considering the critical role it plays in ensuring the well-being of the population.
Electricity and gas supply enterprises, non-governmental commercial organizations, and agriculture and water management each had 30, 25, and 20 cases, respectively. These sectors are vital for the country’s infrastructure and economy, and corruption within these areas can have far-reaching consequences.
Addressing issue
The individuals involved in these bribery cases were brought to justice following the established procedure. This highlights the government’s commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring accountability.
