The Society Research Center of Bishkek State University named after academician Kusein Karasayev conducted a comprehensive social survey to gauge the moods and expectations of Kyrgyz citizens in 2023, as per 24.kg. The study, conducted from December 26 to 29, involved a telephone and online survey of 1,000 Kyrgyz citizens across the country.
Main event of year: national flag change
Almost a quarter (24.7%) of the respondents named the change of the national flag as the main event of the year. This change was approved by Kyrgyzstan’s parliament and is now awaiting the president’s signature. The new design aims to rid the flag of its likeness to a sunflower, which in the local culture symbolizes fickleness and servility.
Other significant events
In addition to the flag change, respondents highlighted several other significant events:
- Fight Against Corruption (22.4%): The Kyrgyz residents recognized the government’s efforts to combat corruption as a major event of the year.
- Increase in Pensions and Benefits (21.4%): The increase in pensions and benefits was another significant event, reflecting the government’s focus on social welfare.
- Construction of Social Facilities (20.8%): The construction of schools, hospitals, and other social facilities was also noted as a key development.
The events included the fight against organized criminal groups (9.9%), the holding of the second People’s Kurultai (8.7%), the settlement of the issue of state borders (6.5%), and international sports achievements (2.1%).
