Presidential Decree
President Sadyr Japarov has signed a decree recognizing the snow leopard as the national symbol of the Kyrgyz Republic, as reported by the press service of the head of state.
Symbol of Natural Wealth and Cultural Well-being
The snow leopard is not just a symbol of natural wealth and cultural well-being, but also an indicator of the stability and health of the mountain ecosystem, which occupies one-third of the global territory. The loss of snow leopards in nature could risk a delicate ecological balance, potentially having a detrimental effect on various animal species and humans.
Endangered Species
The snow leopard is listed on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is considered a rare or endangered species in 12 countries worldwide.
Cultural Significance
In the culture of the ancient Kyrgyz people, the snow leopard personified greatness, nobility, courage, and endurance. According to legend, the leopard was a totem animal of the great Manas. The unity of man and nature, as symbolized by the snow leopard, was vividly described in the last novel of the writer Chingiz Autmatov, “When the Mountains Fall”.
Global Wildlife Conservation
Kyrgyzstan is an active participant in global wildlife conservation programs. The World Forum on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard, with the support of representatives of 12 countries of the snow leopard range and the international community in the field of environmental protection, unanimously adopted the Bishkek Declaration on the Protection of the Snow Leopard and approved the comprehensive Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection (GSLEP).
State Support and Future Initiatives
For further state support of initiatives to preserve the snow leopard and its ecosystem in the Kyrgyz Republic, President Japarov signed a special decree. The decree instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to take measures on several fronts:
- Recognition of the status of the national symbol of the snow leopard in the country
- Protection of the population of the snow leopard, as well as its ecosystem in the republic
- Popularization of the national symbol, development of a logo, application options, and determination of the directions of application of the symbol at the national and international levels
- Determination of the ideological content of the national symbol
The Ministries of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, Foreign Affairs, Economy and Commerce, Finance and the National Investment Promotion Agency are instructed to ensure interaction at the national and international levels to popularize the national symbol of the snow leopard, organize measures to protect the population and ecosystem within the framework of international cooperation, attract investments on international platforms, and apply the national symbol in the tourism segment.
