In Kyrgyzstan, MP Marlen Mamataliyev has proposed a legislative amendment suggesting that pedophiles should exclusively face life imprisonment, 24.kg reports.
The parliamentarian introduced the draft law to the parliamentary committee on constitutional legislation, government structure, judicial and legal issues, and normative legal documents of Dzhokhargi Kenesh. Currently, the law allows for a sentencing range of 15 years to life imprisonment for offenses against the sexual integrity of children, a provision that Mamataliyev aims to eliminate.
In expressing his stance, Mamataliyev asserted, "Men over 60 are not sentenced to life imprisonment. We propose to remove this provision as well. Even if they are kept in prison at the expense of the state, these criminals have no right to walk on our land! They should rot in prison!"
However, his colleague Gulya Kojokulova voiced opposition to the proposed bill, arguing that while it is essential to address rapists, each case should be evaluated individually, allowing for legal alternatives. The General Prosecutor's Office also expressed resistance to the project. Following the deliberation, the committee members unanimously endorsed the concept of the draft law.
