A memorial honoring the victims of the pedophile serial killer Marc Dutroux has been unveiled in the Belgian city of Charleroi, 27 years after his arrest, Euronews has reported.
The inauguration took place at the site where Dutroux's house once stood before being demolished.
The Dutroux case had a profound impact on Belgium, with around 300,000 people participating in the "White March" in Brussels in 1996, demanding the protection of children from violence following his arrest.
Jean Russo, the father of one of Dutroux's young victims, underscored the historical significance of the "White March" for Belgium, stating that it became a part of the country's history when people took to the streets.
Marc Dutroux was responsible for the deaths of at least 11 individuals, including six girls as young as eight. He was convicted in 2004 on charges of pedophilia, rape, murder, and kidnapping and sentenced to life in prison. Three others were also convicted in connection with his crimes. Dutroux had claimed the existence of a wider network of pedophiles, allegedly working alongside him.
