From January to October 2023, Uzbekistan accounted for almost half of the total volume of supplies, purchasing 1.9 mn tons of products. This marks a substantial increase of 40% compared to the previous year.
Flourishing trade
During the same period, grain exports from Kazakhstan reached 3.8 mn tons of wheat and meslin, amounting to $1bn. This represents a growth of 24% in volume and 7% in value compared to the same period in 2022.
Other major importers
Following Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan were the next major importers, purchasing 404,000 and 322,000 tons of grain, respectively. Tajikistan saw an increase of 12% in its volume of imports.
Turkmenistan secured the third position with an import volume of 230,000 tons, marking an increase of 19%. Other notable importers included Azerbaijan, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan.
Global market trends
Beyond the CIS region, Afghanistan, China, Italy, and Turkey emerged as the largest markets during this period.
Afghanistan imported 322,000 tons of grain, marking an increase of 24%. China, which did not import any wheat from Kazakhstan in 2022, imported 249,000 tons in 2023. Italy and Turkey also saw significant increases in their import volumes, with increases of 47% and 54%, respectively.
Smaller volumes were shipped to Tunisia, Iran, Latvia, Spain, and Sweden. The minimum export volumes fell to the Netherlands, Germany, and Mongolia.
